Hypnotherapy
What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is about inducing a relaxed state so that you are less likely to consciously or deliberately reject ideas. Then suggestions are made to replace the unhelpful ideas that are leading to bad habits or harmful behaviours.
Looking to give up smoking, a patient may be talked into a relaxed state. Typical suggestions might be ‘the smell of cigarettes makes you feel nausea’, or, ‘you are happy to be a non-smoker’.
How you are helped to relax and what suggestions may be used depend on the issue you face and what kind of person you are.
Many people are nervous about being hypnotised, but hypnotherapy is nothing like the entertainers we see on TV! No swinging watches, loss of control or lost time. Therapeutic hypnosis is perfectly safe.
You will remain aware throughout, able to hear and understand what I’m saying. You won’t suddenly start making unwanted confessions and you can’t be ‘fooled’ into doing things that go against your beliefs.
There are two essential ways of embedding helpful thoughts. The first is to simply state them. However, it may be that strong feelings make you fight against these direct ideas. The second method is to develop stories and metaphors which suggest the positive ideas. This can make it easier for your mind to accept them. There are many subtle variations in between, meaning we will be able to find the right format for you.
What happens in a session?
Our first steps are to discuss the issue you face, your therapeutic goal and agree on the best approach.
Some issues can be dealt with in a single session, others will require longer-term treatment.
In a typical session you can choose between lying on a couch or sitting in a chair. Most people prefer quiet background music which you can help select. I then talk to you, leading you into a state of deep relaxation.
Depending on your preferred approach I might encourage you to tense and relax your feet, legs, arms etc. until you’ve released tension all over. Other people prefer a story that draws them into a calm state.
Hypnotherapy is especially useful for tackling a single issue. For more long-term or complex scenarios I also offer these services:

While they can feel overwhelming, many problems we face are sustained or created by our bad habits of thought and action. Extraordinary change can be achieved by breaking these habits and replacing them with positive traits.
